Lead the future of physics across Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The Institute of Physics (IOP) is the professional body and learned society for physics in the UK and Ireland. We’re passionate about unlocking the power of physics to transform lives, shape policy, and inspire the next generation.
We’re looking for an outstanding Lead for Ireland and Northern Ireland, a strategic, relationship-driven leader who can drive impact, build partnerships, and represent IOP at the highest levels across government, education, and industry. This is a unique opportunity to champion physics and help shape its role in society.
About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Membership & Inclusion, you’ll lead the IOP’s work in Ireland and Northern Ireland, ensuring our programmes, partnerships, and advocacy reflect local priorities while aligning with our wider organisational strategy. You’ll guide a talented team delivering impactful initiatives in policy and education, work closely with the Ireland Committee and the IOP’s Irish charity, and act as a visible, trusted voice for physics across the region.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and delivery of IOP’s strategic plan for Ireland and Northern Ireland.
- Build and maintain influential relationships with government, education, business, and community partners.
- Manage and inspire a high-performing team to deliver quality, impact, and innovation.
- Represent IOP on science, business, and education policy matters at senior levels.
- Support and advise the Ireland Committee and IOP’s Irish charity, ensuring legal compliance and strategic alignment.
- Advocate for the needs of the Irish and Northern Irish physics community within IOP.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for funding and collaboration.
About You
You’re a confident and strategic leader with the credibility to influence senior stakeholders and the passion to champion science and education. You bring political acumen, vision, and a collaborative mindset.
You’ll have:
- Proven leadership experience in science, education, policy, or membership settings.
- Deep understanding of the Irish and Northern Irish research, innovation, and education landscape.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Experience with charity governance (knowledge of Irish charity law is desirable).
- Strong strategic planning and organisational skills.
- A degree-level qualification (Level 6) or equivalent experience.
Why Join Us?
At the IOP, you’ll be part of a values-led, forward-thinking organisation shaping the future of physics across Ireland and beyond. You’ll have the opportunity to influence national policy, lead inspiring initiatives, and help grow a vibrant, inclusive physics community.
